Oleksandr Usyk has rushed to the defence of Anthony Joshua after the Brit came under a barrage of criticism for his most recent fight with Jermaine Franklin.

Joshua returned to the ring against the American in April following consecutive losses to Usyk.

Despite winning the contest, many fans criticised the former unified heavyweight champion for not finishing the fight as he had promised in the build-up.

But Usyk believes the backlash is unjust and has challenged fans to first step foot in the ring before expressing their opinions.

‘I think [Joshua] just needs a little more time to recover. He’s a great fighter and a great personality,’ he told Boxing King Media.

‘Who are those people who judge him? Who are the judges? Have they ever entered the ring? Have they ever trained and felt that pain? They have no right to say so.’

He added: ‘If you want to talk about the fighter, you have to at least once in your life get into the ring and get a sparring session. At least for one round, for three minutes. Then you will have the right.’

Joshua has been linked to a rematch with Dillian Whyte in August for his next outing.

Promoter Eddie Hearn affirmed that he has ‘presented offers to Whyte’ for a second fight but it appears AJ has been left out of the loop.

The Watford powerhouse recently came out and said that he has ‘no knowledge’ of any ongoing negotiations with his former foe in a bizarre set of statements uploaded to social media.

‘I don’t know about any talks to fight Dillian Whyte,’ he wrote on Instagram.

Before finishing off his post with an adapted lyric from Stormzy’s hit single WickedSkengMan 4: ‘Everyday, AJ this, AJ that, AJ’s hairline’s going way back, but I’ll still f*** your girl, go retweet that.’
