UNC basketball rumors: Son of former Duke star switching sides in rivalry?

Hubert Davis is looking to score a big win for UNC basketball on the 2025 recruiting trail, offering two big-name prospects, the sons of a former Duke star.

Though the primary concerns of UNC basketball fans likely center around how Hubert Davis reshapes the Tar Heels’ roster for the 2023-24 season after major losses to the transfer portal, there’s no question that the successor to Roy Williams has started to lay the groundwork on the recruiting trail for the future.

Assuming that either Ian Jackson or Elliot Cadeau don’t reclassify for the 2023 class, North Carolina currently has the top-ranked recruiting class for the 2024 cycle. And now Davis and his staff seem to be trying to do the same for the 2025 class as well.

Even better, they’d be sticking it to the always-hated Duke Blue Devils and one of the program’s legend if they were able to do that as well.

This past weekend, Davis and UNC basketball gave offers to twins Cameron and Cayden Boozer. And yes, they are, in fact, the sons of former Duke star Carlos Boozer.

UNC basketball rumors: Tar Heels offer Cameron, Cayden Boozer, sons of former Duke star Carlos Boozer

Both of the Boozer twins are rated as Top 25 players in the 2025 recruiting class according to the 247Sports Composite, but Cameron is the top-ranked recruit in the country for the cycle (Cayden is No. 24). And for those wondering, they are not identical twins as Cameron is a 6-foot-9 forward while Cayden is a 6-foot-3 guard — which is actually a benefit to any program looking to keep the twins playing together.

For what it’s worth, though, this isn’t the first offer for either player. Cameron has seven offers already while Cayden has six. Both have been offered by Arkansas, Duke, Miami, Florida State, North Carolina and Kentucky while the former also received one from Michigan.

It shouldn’t be a surprise that one of the best programs in college basketball is offering the top-ranked recruit for a given class — that should be the expectation almost always for UNC basketball. However, given that the Boozer twins both announced the offer, there seems to be at least some excitement about the possibility of joining the Tar Heels.

While the more flashy story is definitely the potential sweetness of North Carolina getting not one but two Duke basketball legacies to cross the Tobacco Road rivalry lines to come to Chapel Hill, the fact of the matter is that it speaks to what Hubert Davis is doing on the recruiting trail. Though the 2023 class does leave a lot to be desired, the overall outlook is trending up majorly.

And if he gets to stick it to Duke in the process by landing the Boozer twins, even better.
