Hosea Burton – Tyson Fury‘s cousin – has confirmed his retirement from boxing via his Instagram page.

Ahead of what turned out to be his final bout, 34-year-old Burton revealed that he would retire from the sport if he lost to Ellis Zorro.

‘The Hammer’ told iFL TV: ‘This, to me, is the end of the story if I can’t win this fight. This is as far as it goes [if I lose] because I’m not here to make the numbers up, I’m not here to be a gatekeeper. I’m not that.

‘If I can’t beat somebody like [Zorro], what good am I doing being a boxer. I can earn more money going to work.’

And he remained true to his word, bowing out of boxing after being knocked out by Zorro’s brutal right hand in a fight for the vacant WBO European Cruiserweight title at London’s York Hall last week.

The event at Bethnal Green’s York Hall was marred by crowd trouble. Social media footage showed team members in the ring leaning against the ropes watching on as fans threw chairs and fists at each other, with stewards powerless to stop them.

On Instagram, Burton shared messages paying tribute to his career from other members of the boxing community.

Boxer Scotty Cardle wrote: ‘Great fighter and an even better lad. Congratulations on a successful career @burton_hosea and enjoy retirement champ’.

Retired fighter Stephen Smith added: ‘Loved training alongside you for many years mate, good luck in whatever’s next’.

It marked the end of ‘The Hammer”s history as a professional boxer, which saw him win 28 of his 32 fights, 12 of them coming via KO.

Burton’s last victory, and penultimate fight, was a points success over Darryl Sharp at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in December 2022.

Newcastle-born Burton was a two-time gold-medallist at the English National Championships at the amateur level, topping the tree in 2009 and 2010 in the Middleweight category.
