MLB rumors: Pirates make desperate final attempt to extend Bryan Reynolds

The Pittsburgh Pirates are desperate to sign outfielder Bryan Reynolds to a contract extension. It’ll require a record offer, and it’s unclear if the front office is willing to meet Reynolds demands.

Per MLB insider Jon Heyman, the Pirates have a renewed focus on extending Bryan Reynolds.

Reynolds, who requested a trade this offseason after the two sides remained far apart in contract talks, will begin the season on the roster. It’s unclear if he’s willing to discuss during the season, or if Opening Day is a loose deadline.

Pittsburgh’s previous offer, as confirmed by Heyman in his report, was $76 million over six years. To sign a player of Reynolds caliber, they’d likely have to go over the $100 million mark, and beyond. Reynolds is one of the better young corner outfielders in baseball for a reason.

MLB rumors: Can the Pirates re-sign Bryan Reynolds?

Pittsburgh gave Ke’Bryan Hayes an eight-year, $70 million deal prior to the 2022 season, which remains the richest contract in franchise history. Reynolds extension would surpass that and then some. It won’t be easy.

Prior to his trade request, Reynolds asked for an eight-year, $134 million extension. Pittsburgh balked and countered with an offer Reynolds team found insulting and not in good faith. It was tough to see the light at the end of the tunnel which leads to Reynolds staying in the Burgh. That remains the case, unless the Pirates have altered the way they do business. Owner Bob Nutting commented on how important Reynolds is to the Bucs long-term plans, per Jason Mackey of the PPG:

“If there’s a way we can bridge the gap, we’re working hard to do that. We’re continuing this week to work hard to do it. Bryan’s important. We want to do what’s right for him, for his family and for the team. We absolutely have respect for Bryan. We want to keep lines of communication open.”

Per Forbes, the Pirates were the eighth-most profitable team in baseball last season, making over $51 million in profits. Will some of that be spent on Reynolds deal?
