NHL best bets today (Back Avalanche at home vs. Capitals)

One step back, two steps forward. That’s how that saying goes, right?

After a losing Sunday in the NHL, I bounced back in a big way on Monday, pulling off the 3-0 sweep which included two plus-money bets.

Let’s see if we can keep the momentum going tonight. It’s time to dive into my top three bets for Tuesday night’s NHL slate.

NHL best bets record-to-date

NHL best bets today (Tuesday, January 24)

  • Sharks +130 vs. Red Wings
  • Jets/Predators OVER 5.5 (-125)
  • Avalanche -140 vs. Capitals

Sharks +130 vs. Red Wings

I find the betting market has been overvaluing the Detroit Red Wings this season more often than not. At least that’s my evaluation of them. Their offense has been atrocious lately, with an expected goals per game of 2.61 over their last 10, which is the fourth worst mark in the league over that stretch.

Their goaltending has also struggled as of late. Ville Husso is confirmed to started tonight, and he has a save percentage of .879 in the month of January.

The Sharks are far from a good team, but they may be better than you think. Against a bad offense and a struggling goalie, I’ll gladly back San Jose as a +130 underdog.

Jets/Predators OVER 5.5 (-125)

This bet might be a little bit of a risky one. If the starting goalie is in net for both teams tonight, then we’re going to see a battle between arguably the top two goaltenders in the NHL. With that being the case, it’d be crazy to bet the OVER right? Well, maybe not.

Over the last 10 games, the Predators rank fourth in expected goals for and the Jets rank eighth. So, we have a game between two offenses who are ranked inside the top eight in terms of expected goals, with a total set at the low mark of 5.5.

Even with the potential of a strong goaltending matchup, I’ll still take a shot on the OVER.

Avalanche -140 vs. Capitals

The Avalanche have been playing some of their best hockey of the season as of late. Over their last 10 games, they’re scoring 3.46 goals per game while allowing only 2.27, for a goal differential of +1.19.

Meanwhile, the Capitals have struggled offensively over that stretch, averaging only 2.86 goals per game. They’ve also had goaltending issues, with a team save percentage of 88.97% over their last 10 games.

With the Avs being at home, I’d price them closer to -160 in this matchup, so I think we’re getting a bit of value on the home favorites in this one.
