Heavyweight contender Joe Joyce has claimed Anthony Joshua changed as a fighter after suffering his first KO defeat against Andy Ruiz in 2019.

Entering the bout as a replacement for Jarrell Miller, Ruiz stepped in to face the unified champion, scoring a shocking knockout victory in the seventh round to hand Joshua his first loss as a professional.

In an interview with iD Boxing, Joyce explained his belief that being stopped for the first time fundamentally changed AJ’s approach as a boxer.

‘He’s not gunshy, but he’s apprehensive about being knocked out because he’s been knocked out a few times. He prefers to be on the back foot and out of danger. It will tell when we see the rematch with him and Dillian Whyte.’

Joshua would rematch Ruiz months later, utilising his superior reach to neutralise the Mexican-American’s power and reclaim his title with just the second decision win of his career.

Joyce pointed to the difference in how AJ approached his 2015 fight with perennial contender Dillian Whyte. In the second round at the O2 Arena Whyte staggered Joshua but was unable to take him off his feet, while Joshua responded by upping the tempo before eventually getting the win in the seventh.

‘In the Dillian Whyte fight, he was getting hit with big shots; he was wobbling on his feet but was still coming forward, something obviously changed after the Ruiz loss.’

After reclaiming his belts against Ruiz, Joshua would defend his crown once more, defeating Kubrat Pulev with a ninth-round KO in London in 2020.

Since then the 33-year-old suffered back to back losses to Oleksandr Usyk, and is set to begin his ascent back up the heavyweight ranks, with promoter Eddie Hearn indicating a rematch with Whyte is on the cards for later this year.
