NHL best bets today (Trust Devils at home vs Bruins)

Profit is profit, and that’s exactly what we managed to squeeze out in last night’s return to NHL action, going 3-2 (+0.3 units) with my five best bets.

With tonight’s slate quite a bit smaller, I’m returning to only three best bets.

The slate is highlighted by an Eastern Conference showdown between the New Jersey Devils and Boston Bruins, two teams who could eventually meet in the playoffs.

Without further delay, let’s jump into my three best bets for tonight’s action.

NHL best bets record-to-date

101-94-2 (-0.37 units)

NHL best bets today (Wednesday, December 28)

  • Devils -110 vs. Bruins
  • Red Wings/Penguins UNDER 6.5 (-120)
  • Flames +100 vs. Kraken

Devils -110 vs. Bruins

This game will serve as a rematch of the final game for each team before the holiday break. The Bruins got the better of the Devils, taking home the 4-3 victory. Despite losing, the Devils severely outplayed Boston, outshooting them by a final tally of 40-23.

If the Devils can almost double the Bruins’ shooting output again tonight, it’s hard to envision Boston winning again.

If you look at the statistics, these two teams are extremely close in every category, with the Devils holding the slight edge in most of them. Don’t be fooled by the Bruins record, this game is a lot closer than you might think. I’d set it as a pick’em on neutral ice, so with it taking place in New Jersey, I’ll back the Devils at -110.

Red Wings/Penguins UNDER 6.5 (-120)

I’m a bit confused why the total for this game is set at 6.5. Perhaps it’s due to the Penguins going with their backup goaltender, Casey DeSmith, after playing Tristan Jarry last night, but DeSmith still has a strong .914 save percentage on the season.

In terms of the Red Wings, they’ve been much better defensively than offensively this season. Over their last 25 games, they’re 26th in expected goals for per game and dead last in high-danger scoring chances created. Defensively, they rank 12th in expected goals against and 14th in high-danger scoring chances allowed.

With the total at 6.5, I’ll gladly take a shot on the UNDER in this one.

Flames +100 vs. Kraken

The Flames let me down last night against the Oilers, despite outshooting them by more than double (47-22). Nothing could have prepared me for a Stuart Skinner 46 save performance, so I’m not deterred by the outcome of the game.

I’ll back them again tonight as slight underdogs against a Kraken team that has shielded a lot of its shortcomings this season with strong shooting, ranking first in shooting percentage over their last 25 games. I’m hoping the holiday break has cooled off their stick a bit, and I’ll trust the Flames overall superior numbers to get the job done in the second half of a back-to-back.
