Former four-time World Champion Roy Jones Jr has revealed that he has held more talks with Anthony Joshua, as the heavyweight boxer continues his search for a new trainer.

The 33-year-old is weighing up his options in his search for a new trainer in America as he prepares for a return to the ring in the New Year.

Joshua is preparing for his first non title fight since 2015, having lost his WBO, WBA and IBF titles in a one-sided unanimous decision defeat to Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last year.

After that defeat Joshua opted to leave his long-term trainer Rob McCracken – who guided the Brit to a gold medal at the London 2012 Olympics.

The Watford-born Boxer then replaced McCraken with Robert Garcia, but following his rematch defeat to Usyk in August, he decided to also part ways with the American after that bout – leaving him without a trainer.

Jones Jr, who has worked with Chris Eubank Jr for his recent fights – though he wasn’t in the equation for his cancelled bout against Conor Benn – has thrown his name into contention to fill the current void after previously holding initial talks back in November.

The 53-year-old told Boxing Social: ‘We spoke and I do have a plan for him.

‘I haven’t told him yet, but if he likes the way that we get along in the gym, then for me, any fighter he fights is going to be a big fight anyway.

‘But, you got to go with guys who are not quite as good as Usyk or Tyson Fury yet.

‘We need two good fights to get yourself back into motion and they’ll be good fights, they won’t be no stroll fights they’ll be good fights.

‘Then we go after either Usyk or Fury, whoever wins, but we do need two good fights to get him back and I already got two fights in my mind that I want, but I’ve got to talk to him and make sure that he is in agreement.’

The question is now whether Jones Jr could be in Joshua’s corner as he looks set to return to the ring in the Spring of 2023

Promoter Eddie Hearn has talked up the possibility of Joshua potentially facing Deontay Wilder or Dillian Whyte next.

Speaking previously about Joshua’s return, Hearn said: ‘He’s getting ready for his training camp, deciding who he’s going to add, who he’s going to bring in, and getting that ready.

‘Once that’s secure, we’ll then confirm his opponent because we want the training team to be across the opponent selection as well.’

He added: ‘This is a run where we can see him become a three-time heavyweight world champion, but these next steps are very important.

‘I’ve always liked AJ in that fight, but we need to make sure that if we’re fighting someone like Tyson Fury, who is an outstanding fighter, that he’s 100% ready.

‘That’s the plan. To get him in training camp, get the correct team behind him to move him forward to become a three-time heavyweight world champion.’
