Daniel Dubois has allayed fears that he will be out for six months after suffering an ACL injury during his victory over Kevin Lerena earlier this month.

The WBA regular champion controversially defended his title on December 3 – after being knocked down three times by Lerena.

Somehow, the British heavyweight recovered to score a third-round knockout but now faces a spell out of the ring.

Barry McGuigan – the father of Dubois’ trainer Shane – had indicated that the 25-year-old would be sidelined for six months.

But Dubois has since hit back at these reports on social media. He tweeted: ‘6 months is not right! I will be ready to fight in early 2023’.

It comes after McGuigan, who was intrigued that WBA full champion Oleksander Usyk has now expressed a desire to fight Dubois, told Pro Boxing Fans: ‘Well, it’s interesting.

‘Dan has a tear on his ACL, and as soon as we got the news that he had a tear on his ACL, suddenly he was offered the fight – which he can’t have, he can’t box for six months now anyway because of the repair time.’

After a cagey opening to the fight, Dubois was knocked down by Lerena after a solid combination by the challenger.

As he went back to his corner, he indicated to his team that he had suffered an injury.

The heavyweight looked unsteady on his legs during the second round as he looked to gain composure and he was able to make it to the end of the round.

Dubois came out flying in the third round and connected with a huge right to drop Lerena, before catching him with a combination to take the stoppage win.

McGuigan believes Dubois is now ready to face the big household names. ‘He’s ready to fight the top guys, he said.

‘I’d rather he fight someone like Joshua or Tyson Fury because Usyk is a bag of tricks, and he’s a southpaw.

‘He got hit on top of the head last time, and when he stepped back, he tore his ACL, and his balance was badly affected.’

The bout took place on the undercard for Tyson Fury’s trilogy bout with Derek Chisora at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Following his victory, he now holds a 19-1 record with his only loss coming against Joe Joyce back in November 2020.
