Savannah Marshall has revealed she has activated her rematch clause to fight Claressa Shields once again in 2023.

Marshall and Shields went toe-to-toe at the O2 Arena in October, with the American coming out on top to earn a hard-fought unanimous decision.

But Marshall still believes she can beat her bitter rival, and the 31-year-old Geordie hopes to have home advantage once more, with the fight being earmarked for Newcastle’s home ground, St James’ Park.

‘I know Sky are really keen, and BOXXER, to get the rematch at St James’ Park in the summer,’ Marshall told Soccer AM on Saturday morning.

‘It would be in the summer so it doesn’t clash with the football season.’

The first fight was a huge occasion for British boxing as it headlined an all-women’s card, and it appears that the rematch will be even bigger if St James’ Park is the venue chosen.

St James’ Park has a capacity of over 52,000, meaning this could be the highest attended fight ever in women’s boxing.

However, Marshall’s opponent – Shields – has fired back at the Geordie fighter and insisted she will refuse to take part in a rematch bout in the UK, given her victory in their first encounter.

The American wrote on social media: ‘Idk why she think she can outbox me, she can’t box, just a big power puncher!

‘And @SkySportsBoxing & @boxxer we are not fighting the UK! I whooped her! It’s time for her to get her traveling boots on and come to the USA. That’s only way rematch going to get made! #GWOAT’.

Their first bout – which Shields won via unanimous decision – took place at the O2 Arena in London this year and now the 27-year-old wants to rematch back in the States.

Marshall and Shields’ rivalry dates back over a decade after the Brit beat Shields in the amateurs in 2012.

Shields has not lost since then, picking up two Olympic gold medals in 2012 and 2016, and then winning world titles in three different weight classes after turning professional.

The 27-year-old is the self-proclaimed GWOAT (Greatest Woman Of All Time), and avenged her loss to Marshall two months ago.

With the score currently level at 1-1 in terms of victories between the pair, it seems that fans could get to see the decider next year.
