Tyson Fury’s hopes of finalising an undisputed heavyweight title fight with Oleksandr Usyk next look to have been extinguished after the WBA ordered the Ukrainian to fight mandatory challenger Daniel Dubois

As is often the case in boxing, sorting the biggest fights always come with complications and Usyk has now been ordered for two mandatory fights, the other with IBF mandatory Filip Hrgovic.

Fury’s promoters Frank Warren and Bob Arum have long insisted the fight with Usyk would be sealed in the next couple of weeks, while both Usyk and his promoter Alex Krassyuk have made it more than clear it’s the Briton they want next.

Addressing the WBA’s mandatory order of Dubois, Warren, who promotes Dubois and Fury, said on Tuesday that an undisputed clash would take priority for them over a mandatory ordered clash.

Usyk holds the WBA, WBO, IBF and The Ring magazine belts, while Fury, 34, has the WBC title, offering up the prospect of all the belts on the line for undisputed heavyweight champion status.

But mandatories raise the prospect of Dubois and Hrgovic needing to take step-aside money, or, alternatively, belts are vacated to ensure Fury can face Usyk next.

The likelihood of vacating belts would take away the ‘undisputed’ tag and so there is now a maze to navigate following the WBA’s order for Usyk against Dubois.

Usyk is the WBA ‘Super’ title holder while Dubois, who is, like Fury, promoted by Warren, the ‘Regular’ title holder.

The last WBA ‘Super’ mandatory title defence was September 2018, when Anthony Joshua, then without a loss on his resume, sealed a knockout win over Alexander Povetkin.

It is important to note that Dubois and Fury fall under the same Queensbury Promotions and a deal could be struck for him to step aside in the short term to allow the undisputed clash to go ahead.

Dubois could then be first in line to face the victor – should the IBF not dig in with their mandatory.

Hrgovic falls under the Matchroom stable and his promoter Eddie Hearn has long stood firm on the assertion that Usyk must defend against him next before any undisputed fight can take place.

‘The IBF ordered it. We’ve already said we’re not willing to negotiate,’ Hearn told IFL TV recently.

‘This is the request of the team. I want to have an immediate purse bid. That’s within the rules of the IBF. That means that you cannot get an exception.

‘The only way [Usyk] can get an exception is if Hrgovic says he can. And he doesn’t want to give him an exception because he wants to fight for the title.’

Fury revealed after his win over Derek Chisora that he will require surgery on his elbow, which will take ‘about six-to-eight weeks’ to heal, but after that it’s go time.

He suggested after that win that it would be Usyk or Joe Joyce, another from Warren’s stable, next for him.

Joyce is the WBO mandatory for Usyk but that governing body appears more willing to help facilitate an undisputed fight, in comparison to the WBA and IBF.

Fury mentioned recently of his desire to fight 10 times in 2023 and while that was a joke – he wants to be busy is unlikely to want to wait around for Usyk to navigate his mandatories.
