AP Poll Week 6: South Carolina on top, UCLA into top 10

Who is represented in the new AP women’s college basketball poll for week six?

South Carolina unanimously remained number one in the poll, with Stanford, Ohio State, Indiana, and Notre Dame rounding out an unchanged top five.

After starting the season unranked, UCLA climbed three spots to 10th in the AP’s latest poll. The 9-1 Bruins leaped over undefeated LSU, who remained 11th.

The ACC is well-represented in the top ten with Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, North Carolina, and NC State occupying spots five through eight. Virginia Tech and Notre Dame play on Sunday.

Iowa climbed to 12th after defeating rival Iowa State, who dropped to 14th in the loss. Iowa State has another test this week when they play number 25 Villanova on Sunday.

There were some big jumps and falls this week

After their loss to Maryland, UConn dropped three spots to ninth. Maryland shot up to number 15 after that and a strong win against Purdue. The Terrapins were the biggest climber in this week’s poll, moving up five spots from number 20.

Kansas received a ranking for the first time since 2013. The Jayhawks had a dominant week, going 3-0 with an average margin of victory of 28 points. They upset Arizona and defeated Wichita State, who was 9-1 at the time.

Following their loss, Arizona dropped eight spots to number 20, the biggest drop of the week. Michigan fell five spots after their loss to Toledo.

No conference is dominating the poll

Seven different conferences are represented in this week’s poll. The PAC-12 and Big Ten lead the way with five apiece. Both have two teams in the top 10.

The Big 12 and ACC each have four teams. All four ACC teams are in the top 10. Iowa State (14) is the highest-ranked Big 12 team.

The SEC and Big East each have three teams in the poll. All three SEC teams are undefeated, but only South Carolina is in the top 10. UConn leads the way for the Big East.

Gonzaga (23) is the West Coast Conference’s lone representative in the top 25.

Other teams receiving votes were: St. John’s, Marquette, Louisville, Virginia, Texas, Duke, Kansas State, Rice, Florida State, Columbia, Missouri, DePaul, Nebraska, and Middle Tennessee.
