Aussie boxer Nedal ‘Skinny’ Hussein has opened up about the toll of being cheated out of a world title took on his life – after the referee of the controversial bout against Manny Pacquiao has admitted to brazenly cheating.

An unbeaten Hussein took on Pacquiao in the Philippines back in 2000 for the WBC International super-bantamweight title. He was on the cusp of international stardom.

The Australian sensationally dropped Pacquiao in the fourth round with a stiff jab – and then watched on as the local referee Carlos Padilla gave his countryman 18 seconds to regain composure.

For years afterwards, Hussein complained about the crooked officiating while Pacquiao went on to become one of the most famous and wealthy athletes on the planet.

Referee Padilla has recently admitted to tipping the scales in Pacquiao’s favour and ‘prolonging the fight’, saying: ‘I thought he was going to get up, but his eyes were cross eyed [laughs]. I am Filipino and everybody watching the fight is Fillipino, so I prolonged the count. I know how to do it.’

Hussein, who bears no grudge against Pacquiao, found out about Padilla’s quotes on Saturday and was understandably furious.

‘My first reaction? I was gutted,’ he said. ‘I was just gutted. The arrogance of it. I was also really angry – I was burning.’

‘Winning that fight would have changed my life. I missed out on a couple of hundred grand and a world title fight. I would have been able to buy a house and been so much better off.

‘I would have been able to establish my family earlier. And with my career, I missed out on the big fights [afterwards] because of it. It set me back four years. After a while you become the B-side.’

Not only did Padilla admit to giving Pacquiao a long count, he also confessed to making sure the fight was stopped early because he sensed that Pacquiao would not get a result if the bout went to the judges’ scorecards.

Hussein admits he was never the same after being cheated out of a world title in the Philippines. The result left him bitter.

‘I hated the sport after that,’ said Hussein. ‘I just couldn’t handle the politics.’

‘I’ve spoken to Manny [Pacquiao] a couple of times over the years – but never about the knockdown or the fight. It’s not his fault – it’s got nothing to do with him.’

Padilla’s recent admission is astounding and reinforces what Hussein has known for years. However, the confession has also opened old wounds.

‘I don’t want to speak to him [Padilla]. It wouldn’t end well,’ says Hussein.

‘He is meant to give people a fair shake – that’s his job.’

Padilla was inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame in 2022 for his career as a referee, officiating many high profile bouts such as the ‘Thrilla in Manila’, Leonard-Duran 1 and Chavez-Castillo.
